John D. Grabenstein, PhD, is a pharmaco-epidemiologist and a
specialist in vaccinology. Grabenstein received his pharmacy degree
from Duquesne University in 1980, master's degrees from Boston
University in 1988 and University of North Carolina in 1991, and
a doctorate in epidemiology from UNC in 1999. In 2006, he retired
as a colonel in the United States Army Medical Department, where
he served in positions of increasing responsibility until he was
named director of the Military Vaccine Agency in the Army Surgeon
Generals Office. He was scientific director of the Department of Defense's immunization programs for over 9 million troops,
retirees, and their family members dispersed over 4 continents and
dozens of ships at sea.
An avid vaccinologist since 1983, Grabenstein has published more
than 300 articles and revises ImmunoFacts:
Vaccines & Immunologic Drugs for Facts
and Comparisons. He has delivered more than 200 presentations
to pharmacy, medical, and nursing audiences. His credits include
six books, 12 book chapters, and numerous other publications.
He wrote the monthly column "The Immunologic Pharmacopeia"
for the journal Hospital
Pharmacy and the "Vaccine Update"
for the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association.
Grabenstein is a member of the advisory panel of the Immunization
Action Coalition. He directed the American
Pharmacists Association program to train pharmacists to immunize.
He also worked with the Shots
Across Texas childhood immunization initiative. Grabenstein's
other interests include leadership training for pharmacy students.
Elected in 1991, Grabenstein is still the youngest pharmacist
ever selected as a Fellow of the American Society of Health-System
Pharmacists. He also received the U.S. Army Pharmacy Research
Award that year. In 1995, he received both the Duquesne University
School of Pharmacy Dean's Distinguished Achievement Award and
the Order of Military Medical Merit. Grabenstein is a Fellow of
the Royal Society of Health, and holds the society's designation as a
Certified Public Health Pharmacist. He is a contributor of drug
information to the Global Programme on Vaccines of the World Health
Organization.
His other activities include involvement with the Institute
for Safe Medication Practices and the National Catholic Pharmacists
Guild. He served from 1992-95 on the Influenza & Pneumonia
Expert Advisory Group of the American Lung Association. He moderates
the "Immunologic Formulary" section of the The
Formulary (Including Fix-Net D.I.) electronic bulletin board
and the Internet web site www.immunofacts.com ("The
Immunization Gateway").
John's wife, Laurie A. Grabenstein, BSN, collaborates on many
of his projects. She has extensive experience in clinical nursing,
patient education, pharmaceutical research, and disease management.
John and Laurie are the parents of four vaccinated children,
a Sheltie, and a tabby cat. All eight are fully vaccinated.
